BRUCE PEARL OUSTED IN TENNESSEE!

An early exit by Tennessee at the NCAA men’s tournament may have led to an even earlier decision Monday by the school to fire head coach Bruce Pearl. Pearl has been charged by the NCAA with unethical conduct. Athletic Director Mike Hamilton said in a statement issued yesterday, “The cumulative effect of the of the evolution of the investigation combined with a number of more recent non-NCAA-related incidents have led to a belief that this staff cannot be viable at Tennessee in the future.” The school has agreed to pay Pearl almost $950,000 worth of salary and benefits as part of his dismissal agreement.

SPURS WIN, BUT LOSE TIM DUNCAN TO AN ANKLE SPRAIN…

The San Antonio Spurs (57-13) Monday were in very little danger of losing at home to the lowly Golden State Warriors (30-41). The Spurs defeated the Warriors 111-96, but lost their All-Star forward Tim Duncan just about four minutes into the contest with a sprained left ankle that may sideline him for several weeks. X-rays on the 34-year old’s ankle were negative. “I thought he had done real damage, like broken or fractured,” teammate Antonio McDyess said. “I was just happy to see it was just a severe sprain. I actually thought it was worse.” Manu Ginobili led San Antonio with 28 points and Tony Parker had 17.

THE MAGIC WHOOPED UP ON THE CAVS! MEANWHILE, THE BULLS & CELTICS KEEP IT EVEN IN THE EAST

The Chicago Bulls (50-19) Monday reached the 50-win mark for the first time since the 1997-1998 season with a 132-92 pounding of the wretched Sacramento Kings (17-52). No less than eight Bulls (including all five starters) scored double figures, led by Derrick Rose and Kyle Korver who had 18 apiece. The win keeps Chicago tied with the Boston Celtics (50-19) atop the Eastern Conference standings. Meanwhile, the Celtics were in Madison Square Garden taking on the New York Knicks (35-35), where they pulled out a 96-86 win. Kevin Garnett had a monster game, scoring 24 points, pulling down 11 rebounds, and pulling off 4 blocked shots. For the Knicks, Carmelo Anthony and Amare Stoudemire were held to 22 and 16 points, respectively, but worse yet for New York, neither had a bucket in the fourth quarter.

THE BARRY BONDS TRIAL HAS BEGUN!

Jury selection has begun in home-run king Barry Bonds's trial for perjury. In 2003, the former San Francisco Giant told a grand jury he never knowingly took steroids or human growth hormones, but the government doesn't believe him. If convicted, he faces five years in prison. Bonds's personal trainer, Greg Anderson, is in jail for contempt of court after refusing to testify against Bonds.
